Driving To Monteverde: Costa Rican Roadtrip

best things to do in Costa Rica

La Fortuna was definitely one of the biggest highlights of our time in Costa Rica. But we were excited to visit Monteverde, home to one of the world’s most notable cloud forests. The drive from La Fortuna to Monteverde was beautiful and another great reminder as to why we rented a car. We saw entire packs of coatis (half racoon / half monkey looking animals) on the side of the road.

I wish that we had given ourselves more time to stop and fly the drone because every turn was unique and beautiful. Be prepared for some very windy roads on the way there. It also might be a good idea to check before you start driving what types of roads your GPS is taking you on. Right at sunset, we took a turn onto a gravel road that was driveable but probably better for 4×4 cars. Also, the roads in the town of Monteverde are not as in good of shape as the rest of Costa Rica. Apparently the roads used to not be paved at all. But in 2021, the main roads were all paved, just watch out for potholes. (Most likely caused by the large amount of rain in the area.) Just take it slow, drive during the day, and enjoy the views!
