I love that my husband is my best friend. Marrying my best friend has just been awesome.
I love that he gives the best advice and encouragement.
I love that we can sing Taylor Swift songs at the top of our lungs.
And learn the gangham style dance.
I love that I can finish his sentences for him.
Or that sometimes, I feel like he knows me better than I know myself.
I love that I can be myself around him, even if myself is a little crazy.
I love that the other day, I walked upstairs and found that he had made a fort out of sheets for us to watch a movie under. Little things like that make my heart melt and remind me that I’m so thankful I’m married to him.
My advice? Do everything you can to be your husband’s best friend. Listen to him when he is talking about something he’s interested in. Make an effort to suggest you do things that he would enjoy. And participate when he wants you to.
Like this: last week Hudson wanted to have a Nerf war. He bought these thin PVC pipes that, when you blow on one end, will shoot out the Nerf bullets. So he set this little display up where we each had to knock down our side and then hit the orange one in the middle. When he asked me to play, I looked at him and gave the usual response: “Sorry, maybe later, but right now I have so much to do.” And then I started feeling a little guilty. Like really, Emily? Marrying my best friend suddenly means nothing? I have so much to do that I can’t even spend time with the person I love the most? So I played. And to be honest, IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. Not even kidding, you should try it. Go buy PVC pipes!
I share that story as an encouragement to you, and as a reminder to myself, to make time for the people who matter most. Yeah, life is busy — and sometimes we really don’t have the time right when they ask . But remember who your best friends are, and make time for them. And if you’re married, make an intentional effort this week to reach out to your husband and try something he likes.
