As I shared in this post the other week, this year one of my goals is to regularly be “up in the gym just working on my fitness” (thanks, Fergie).

One of many things I’ve realized about being consistent with working out is that I have a lot more energy throughout my day. For some reason, even though I wake up earlier to work out, I feel a lot more refreshed and more “with it” overall. Do you feel the same way when you work out?

Although I don’t claim to be the next Olympic athlete anytime soon (or ever, for that matter), today I wanted to share three workout tips that I’ve found essential.

1. Breathe.

Something Hudson frequently laughs at me about when we work out is that I forget to BREATHE! For some reason, I feel like if I hold my breath until I get my 10 reps in, then maybe it will go quicker. Not the case…one time I almost fainted because I forgot this crucial “little” detail! So that’s my #1 workout tip.

2. Don’t compare.

There are many people at the gym who are in better shape than I am, and it can be easy to compare myself to them and wonder why I can’t lift that much or look like that. But what I forget is that (1) they have probably been regularly coming to the gym a lot longer than me, so of course that would be true; and (2) even if not, that doesn’t matter – what matters is that I am taking one step at a time. And as long as I am giving my best, that’s really all I can ask of myself!

3. Stay hydrated.

Remember in school when they taught you to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day? I have enough trouble doing that, let alone drinking even more water than that to replenish the water I “lose” during a workout. I keep a water bottle at work, but even that doesn’t keep me as hydrated as I need to be. I found DripDrop Hydration Powder at CVS (it’s actually in the baby aisle), which is a clinically shown way to treat mild to moderate dehydration, and it’s made a big difference for me! I’ve found it’s one of my favorite ways to refuel after a good workout.
