Perfection

perfectionYou might remember my post last year about pretending to be perfect. With various reunions, weddings, and other parties this summer — where I’ve caught up with some people I haven’t seen in years — I’ve been reflecting on both how I portray myself to others, and how the people I enjoy being around portray themselves.

And what I’ve realized is that I really appreciate people who are genuine.

Sometimes I think it’s difficult to take away that “perfection” facade because (1) I don’t know what other people will think, and (2) I want people to think I’m a positive person who generally has my stuff together. (But that is not anywhere close to true.)

What’s been hitting me lately is that NO ONE is anywhere close to perfection. And I guess I just wish we could all realize that the happy plastic people thing doesn’t exactly cut it. If only we could just be REAL about our joys, our struggles, our exciting moments, our heartbreaks.

I was talking about this with one of my closest friends and she said this:

“The Lord doesn’t call us to perfection. He calls us to be His followers and to come just as we are, which is a mess. If we were perfect, we wouldn’t need Him.”

Wow. Such a powerful (and humbling) reminder. God calls us to be REAL. To recognize that without Him, we are nothing. Even though I believe that, it sure is difficult to live that out on a daily basis. But from now on, I’m going to try.

Do you feel the same way about perfection? If so, how do you balance being genuine without coming across as negative?
