Insecurity

I want to have JOY in who I am instead of letting insecurity get the best of me.I don’t know about you, but I struggle with insecurity.

It’s easy to look at other people and think that we don’t measure up. And Facebook, Instagram, and even blogs sure don’t help…even though we KNOW that most people choose to show the best side of themselves.

But beyond that, there’s another level of insecurity…one that, at least in my life, can be even more destructive.

It’s not the insecurity that comes from comparing myself to others, but from comparing myself to the “perfect” Emily. The ideal version of myself is 15 pounds lighter, never hits snooze, is ALWAYS happy, and goes out of my way to selflessly put others’ needs above my own.

And every day, this little voice in my head says “Emily, you’re not enough.”

WHAT?!

God created us wonderfully (Psalm 139:14), in His own image (Genesis 1:27). And Jesus loves us SO much that He gave up His life for us (John 15:13). So knowing that…why can’t we love ourselves? How come it’s so easy pretending to be perfect, yet we know we’re SO far from that — and we have to remind ourselves of that insecurity every single day?!

Now, I do think it’s important to do what we can to embetter ourselves. I would like to get in better shape as well as be disciplined, happy, and selfless.  And I think those are all realistic goals. The question is…how do we do that without struggling with insecurity? How do we become better people, but have JOY in who we are instead of always comparing ourselves to that “perfect” version of us? (These aren’t rhetorical questions; I’d love to hear your advice in the comments below!)

Comparison is the thief of JOY. And joy is something I don’t want to live without. So here’s to no more insecurity. You with me?!
