Hard Times in Marriage

hard times in marriageLast night, Hudson and I were up past midnight just laughing in bed about the most random things. I forget what was even so funny, but I love acting like little kids with my husband and waking up with a smile on my face knowing how blessed I am to be his wife. I just love the life we’ve built together so far.

This morning I was thinking: we still hopefully have close to 60 years together. 60 years is a long time which is AWESOME, but…things aren’t going to always be this easy. We’ve been generally blessed with an easy and wonderful life so far, but that doesn’t mean we will never have hard times in marriage. Most older couples I know have been through a LOT together and in the next 60 years, Hudson and I could go through just as much.

A car accident. Miscarriage. Cancer. Death of people close to us. The list of hard times in marriage goes on and on…

Will hard times in marriage make us or break us?

One thing I know for sure is that on June 2nd, 2012, I committed to “for better and for worse.” And through the hard times in marrige, I want my best friend by my side. I pray that through difficult things, Hudson and I will grow even closer to each other. And most of all, I pray that we’ll grow closer to Jesus and remain committed to Him.

At our wedding, we sang the song Never Once by Matt Redman, and I want to always remember the words:

Standing on this mountaintop
Looking just how far we’ve come
Knowing that for every step
You were with us

Kneeling on this battle ground
Seeing just how much You’ve done
Knowing every victory
Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

God is always faithful to us. So when the hard times in marriage come – will I be devoted to Jesus and committed to my husband with everything I am? I sure hope so.

I spent this morning praying for our marriage and asking God to give Hudson and I strength to grow closer together during the hard times in marriage, rather than apart. I want to take more steps now to prepare us for adversity.

How have you prepared for hard times in marriage?
