FAQs About LASIK Eye Surgery Answered

FAQs about LASIK eye surgery

It’s been six weeks since Em and I received LASIK eye surgery. We had such a great experience at Eye Doctors of Washington and can see better than we ever could with contacts! Below is a video we created of our experience!! (You can also click here to watch a shorter version of that video.)

FAQs About LASIK Eye Surgery

Since our surgery, a lot of people have asked us questions about our experience, so today I also wanted to answer the top five most frequently asked questions.

1. Was LASIK worth it?

When people hear that we received LASIK, this is almost always the first question they ask. In the past six weeks, the only question Em and I have had is why didn’t we get LASIK sooner?!!

I had previously worn contacts on a daily basis because I played a lot of sports and glasses just seemed to get in the way. But my contacts were constantly falling out or irritating my eye. I had several eye infections while wearing contacts because of all the bacteria that I kept putting into my eyes.

We also like to travel and we always had to remember to take extra contacts, solution, and glasses. It was annoying to have to fill our toiletries bag with things for our eyes. We also like to do a lot of activities like jet skiing, parasailing, and snorkeling and our contacts gave both of us issues during these activities.

Every morning and night, we had to start and end our day thinking about contacts. This was definitely not a big motivator to start my day – dragging myself into the bathroom, fumbling around for my contacts, and struggling to put them in while still half asleep! Now I have one less thing to do in my daily routine! (Although there have still been mornings that I find myself standing in front of the sink and opening my eye before I realize I no longer wear contacts. I guess some habits take a little while to break!)

After our LASIK, we can now see better than we ever could with 20/15 vision! And we don’t have to worry about packing extra contacts or about our contacts irritating our eyes. It’s wonderful!

2. Is LASIK painful?

Something that I was a little concerned about is how I would do during the actual surgery. I am really bad at keeping my eyes open when getting my eyes dilated or even just putting in eye drops. I was afraid that if I moved my eyes during the surgery, that I could mess up my eyes forever. But our LASIK surgeon, Dr. Kang, did an excellent job of explaining that Eye Doctors of Washington’s machine tracks your eyes 500 times a second and accounts for your every movement. Even if I were to suddenly sneeze, the machine would automatically shut off.

During the surgery, my eyes were so numbed that the most I could feel was a slight pressure. It felt about the same as pressing my finger into the palm of my hand – no pain at all. I was in and out of the surgery room before I even had time to be nervous!

3. How long is the recovery process?

Before the procedure, I heard some people say that it can takes weeks to recover from LASIK. Other people mentioned about chronic dry eye or vision halos that can develop.

However, with the industry leading technology that Eye Doctors of Washington (EDOW) uses, by the next day I was able to drive and go about my normal routine! Also, because of the advances in technology, issues such as chronic dry eye and vision halos are pretty much a thing of the past. The machines at EDOW are so precise that your eyes are able to heal quickly and fully.

The first night my eyes felt a little grainy and dry, as Dr. Kang told us they would (he even texted us to check in and see how we were doing!), but by the time I woke up the next morning that was all gone. The only other things we had to do is use eyedrops and wear sunglasses during the day and eye masks during the night for the first week to help keep dust out of our eyes and keep us from rubbing them.

I would take one day of recovery for a lifetime of better vision any day!

4. What if my vision gets worse in the future?

The awesome thing about getting LASIK with Eye Doctors of Washington is that they offer a lifetime warranty! If your eyesight ever does decrease, you can receive a free retouch procedure. However, the LASIK technology at EDOW is so advanced that they said there are very few patients who ever need a retouch.

Also, we now don’t have to worry about buying new contacts each year. So, for the rest of our lives, the only cost we will ever have to spend on our eyes is for occasional eye exams!

5. Is all LASIK the same?

One thing that I did not know before this experience is that not all LASIK is equal. LASIK has advanced tremendously since its inception. However, not all eye doctors are currently using the most advanced technology to perform their LASIK procedures. So when you see specials for $1,000 LASIK, that eye doctor is likely using dated technology.

And I don’t know about you, but my eyesight is not something that I am looking to skimp on! It gave me a real peace of mind knowing that we had the best technology in the world, with some of the best doctors in the field. The technology is so advanced that it is approved for fighter pilots and astronauts. EDOW has even performed LASIK on some of the the Washington Capitals and Wizards players! So I felt pretty confident that Dr. Kang knew what he was doing!

Not only does EDOW offer the latest and greatest technology, but their doctors meet with you personally before the procedure and go over the entire process. I have talked with other people who received LASIK that never even met their doctors until the day of the surgery! Dr. Kang was so personal and patient. He explained each step and made us feel really cared for, making sure that we received the best vision!

Em and I are so thankful we received LASIK and so grateful to Eye Doctors of Washington for making this such an incredible experience for us. We can’t wait to start traveling and being able to experience the world through our own eyes, minus the contacts! :)
